Check out our Read-a-Thon video for all things Read-a-thon! |
It's that wonderful time of year again where we promote our school's love for reading! The Read-A-Thon is a fun, profitable fundraiser that allows our children to raise money for their PTA without selling anything.
The best part of the READ-A-THON is that 100% of the proceeds in a Read-A-Thon will be used at our school! The money raised will go toward updating the currently audio/visual system used in the gym for assemblies and movie nights.

Here's how our Read-A-Thon works:
We will be sending Read-A-Thon packets home on March 2nd with all information and logs, so check your student's backpack. Your student should set a total reading minute goal for the entire Read-A-Thon and record their daily minutes read. Please initial your child’s recorded time each day on their Reading Log.
Your student can also participate by find sponsors to pledge money for their reading (only ask family and friends). Please note that finding sponsors is not a requirement to participate in the Read-A-Thon but does help the PTA and students who participate will be eligible for extra entries into the drawing and a special fundraising prize.
Your student should read EVERY day, and read a lot, from March 2nd until March 23rd. At the end of the event on March 23rd, your child should tally up their minutes read and, if appropriate, collect their pledge money from their sponsors and bring the collected money to school. Your student needs to turn in their Reading Log(s) and Sponsorship Form(s) with all monies (if appropriate) no later than Monday, March 27th! At an assembly on March 29th , the winners of the Grand Prizes will be announced.
Rules (What Counts and What doesn't)
All reading materials count! Newspapers, Magazines, Books, Comic Books, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, etc. In other words, if you can read it, it counts!
Counts for minutes
1. Reading before and after school counts.
2. Being read to by other people counts ONLY for K-2nd Grade.
3. Reading in a train, with a fox, in the rain, or on a box does count.
4. Reading under the bed covers, with a flashlight, late at night counts (but only if it is okay with your parents).
5. Reading instead of watching TV or playing video games counts.
6. Character! Being honest about your minutes is important to ensure fairness
Does NOT Count for minutes
1. Reading before the official beginning of the Read-A-Thon does NOT count.
2. Reading during class time does NOT count.
3. Reading instead of doing your homework does NOT count.
4. Listening to Audiobooks does NOT count.
5. Watching the movie version of your favorite book does NOT count.
Read-A-Thon FAQs
What does my child need to do to participate in the Read-A-Thon?
Your student should set a total reading minute goal for the entire Read-A-Thon and record it on their Reading Log . Then, from March 2nd until March 23rd they should record their daily minutes read on their Reading Log and have a parent or other responsible adult sign to verify their minutes. After the Read-A-Thon ends on March 23rd, and no later than March 27th, your child should turn in their Reading Log along with any sponsorship money collected.
What about Sponsors?
Getting sponsorships for reading goals is NOT required to participate in the Read-A-Thon. However, monies raised will help the PTA pay for many of it's activities. To that end, we are offering special prizes to those students who raise money. To participate in the Sponsorship portion of the Read-A-Thon, your child should make a note of their reading goal on their Sponsorship Form. Then they can ask for sponsors to help them raise money by sponsoring them for the minutes they read, lump sum by day for the number of days read, in a lump sum if their total reading goal is met, etc. Checks should be made payable to Garfield PTA. PLEASE, if your child chooses to participate in the Sponsorship portion of the Read-A-Thon, make sure that they only ask people they know: friends, family, neighbors, etc. We want everyone to keep safe.
Is it ok just ballpark our minutes read?
In order to keep it fair and fun for everyone, we must ask that you keep strict time (to the nearest whole minute) of your student's minutes read. That means we're asking everyone to use a timer, watch their time on a clock, or use stop watch. Please do NOT guess at minutes read. We realize that being conscientious of minutes read is additional work for families and it is the ONLY way to ensure fairness for the Read-A-Thon. Your vigilance is greatly appreciated.
