March Meeting Recap
Melissa Davis presented on Snap-Ed resources and projects coming up. The students will have opportunities to help clean the Garfield gardens as well as plant seeds at home. Students will have the opportunity to plant seeds to grow starts at the home to be planted in the garden at a later time. There is also a food pantry recipe challenge. Students can submit Mac and Cheese recipes to win a prize. To learn more about the challenge check out the Garfield PTA Facebook page!
Melissa Morrill provided the Staff Report. The staff enjoyed the virtual dance! The teachers are thrilled to hear the PTA is fundraising for the teacher grants. There will be a virtual assembly on March 17th at 9 am.
Mr. Chertok provided his principal report. Hybrid has started for grades 3-5. There is a lot of excitement around bringing the small groups of students together. He recognized distance learning students are also seeing a change. A former Garfield student would like to paint a mural on the play shed and will be working with Mr. White to complete this project. There might be opportunities for students to help paint.
Teacher Grant Fundraiser
Every year, the PTA provides Garfield teachers grants to purchase supplies for their classrooms. The grant money comes from PTA fundraisers. This school year, the PTA decided to postpone our fundraisers due to the pandemic. This decision impacted fulfilling the teacher grants this year. Teachers continued to purchase supplies for their virtual classrooms (monitors, document cameras, etc) and now are purchasing supplies for their hybrid classrooms.
We're at 27% of our $5,000 goal. We began the fundraiser last month and have raised $1,370. We will assess where we are in our goal at the April PTA meeting in order to fulfill the grants.

Virtual Dance Party!
Our second virtual dance party was a hit! We had so many song requests we weren't able to play all of them! We had over 30 families and staff participate. We enjoyed Ms. Sperline's campsongs and Mrs. Beattie's story! A big thanks goes out to DJ Jenny and Aaron for working the controls as well as the other parent volunteers who helped spotlight dancers and monitor the chats. It was great to see families and staff dancing. Those who didn't dance, had fun chatting with friends and staff through the Zoom chat.
Planning for Next School Year
Next year is already coming up and we need to start planning. On Monday, March 22, 2021 is the planning meeting at 6:30 pm via Zoom. This meeting is scheduled to last 90 minutes. There will be a lot of topics to discuss such as budget, fundraisers, and board placements.
The meeting is open to everyone! Stop by and provide your thoughts and feedback for next year.
Each year our board positions require a nomination. The nominations come from the Nomination Committee or through self nomination. We're looking for three volunteers to be on the nomination committee to nominate next year's board. The committee meets outside of the PTA meetings to discuss the positions and recommendations. The committee would present the nominating slate at the May or June meeting for members to vote. The time commitment is minimal. If you have questions about the process or would like to volunteer to be on the committee, please email Marianne McIntosh at firstname.lastname@example.org
If we don't receive volunteers for the nominating committee by April 12, 2021, members will need to nominate other members or self nominate for the board positions.
Sweet Lee's Ice Cream Fundraiser!
On Saturday, April 17th, Garfield PTA will be hosting a fundraiser at Sweet Lee's Ice Cream food truck. This is a new business and located on Harrison Ave across the street from Mudd Bay Pet Store behind the California Taco food truck.
As long as customers mention they are purchasing ice cream to support Garfield PTA, we will receive 10% of the sales!
The PTA will be creating a Facebook event as well as posting the fundraiser on the website. You can help spread the word by sharing the fundraiser on your Facebook page or letting your family, neighbors, coworkers, friends, etc know about the fundraiser. The more customers purchasing ice cream, the more funds we receive!
Our next meeting will be held 4/12/2021. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm and will be held via Zoom.
Superintendent Patrick Murphy will be participating in our meeting. He will be here to answer any questions you may have.

Each year the PTA has supported our teachers with teacher grants to purchase supplies for their classrooms. The funds for these grants are usually raised through our normal fundraising we do throughout the year. As we all know this year has been anything but normal. As our teachers make their way through yet another transition with some moving to hybrid and others still teaching remote, we want to support them as much as we possibly can.
We had such a wonderful response for our Holiday Spirit fundraiser. We are hoping to do it once again and raise money for our amazing teachers. All donations made between February 1st and April 30th will be used for teacher grants.
